Clinical Interests:
Dr Khan enjoys all aspects of general cardiology, including the assessment and treatment of breathlessness, palpitations, high blood pressure, dizziness and chest pain. His speciality interest is the treatment of blocked coronary arteries using coronary angioplasty and stents. He is a member of the team that has set up the emergency angioplasty services for treatment of heart attacks at St Mary’s/Hammersmith Hospitals and has helped lead the development of this service at Watford General Hospital.
Education and Training:
Dr Khan studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1991. He worked as a junior doctor in Cambridge, and at St George’s Hospital in South West London. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1995.
He trained in Cardiology in North West London between 1996 and 2005, primarily at The Hammersmith and St Mary’s Hospitals. He spent three years during this time at the National Heart & Lung Institute doing full time cardiovascular research funded by the British Heart Foundation.
Consultant Appointments:
Dr Khan was appointed a Consultant in Cardiology at Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Mary’s Hospitals in 2005. Following the transfer of services from Hemel Hempstead Hospital to Watford General Hospital, he now works at both those sites, and after the merger of St Mary’s and The Hammersmith Hospitals, he has transferred his work from St Mary’s to The Hammersmith Hospital.
Dr Khan is the lead cardiologist for Clinical Governance (i.e. ensuring high quality medicine) at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Research:
Dr Khan’s research at the National Heart & Lung Institute studied the flow of blood within the heart, in normal individuals and those with coronary disease. He presented his work at international meetings in Europe and North America.
More recently, Dr Khan has published research papers on the treatment of valvular heart disease in the very elderly, and the assessment of the severity of coronary disease using intracoronary pressure measurements..
Dr Khan has had an interest in teaching throughout his career. He has taught, and continues to teach and lecture to, UK medical students and cardiology trainees, and doctors from overseas specialising in Cardiology.
National Roles:
Dr Khan is a member of the West Hertfordshire Joint Prescribing Group, which reviews the appropriate use of medication in Hertfordshire.
